Solar Panel Maintenance in Florida: What Homeowners Need to Know

Solar panels require very little maintenance. With no moving parts, modern solar systems are designed to operate reliably for 25 to 30 years with minimal intervention. However, Florida's climate — heavy pollen seasons, frequent rain, salt air near the coast, and occasional severe weather — creates some maintenance considerations.

Do Solar Panels Need to Be Cleaned in Florida?

In most of Florida, rain is frequent enough to keep panels reasonably clean without manual washing. However, during dry season (November through April), pollen accumulation can reduce panel output by 5 to 15 percent. A simple rinse with a garden hose from the ground is usually sufficient.

Monitoring Your System's Performance

The most important maintenance activity is monitoring system production through your inverter's app. Check your production at least monthly and compare it to the production estimates in your original proposal. A sustained 10% or greater drop in production that does not correspond to cloudy weather warrants investigation.

Annual Professional Inspection

We recommend an annual professional inspection of your solar system, particularly the mounting hardware and electrical connections. Florida's heat, humidity, and UV exposure can accelerate corrosion of inferior mounting hardware.

Inverter Maintenance and Lifespan

String inverters typically have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years and will need replacement during the 25-year life of your solar system. Microinverters and power optimizers generally last 20 to 25 years. Most inverters come with 10 to 25 year warranties.

Critter Guard Installation

In Florida, squirrels and birds frequently nest in the space between solar panels and the roof, causing wiring damage. Critter guard — a wire mesh installed around the perimeter of your panel array — prevents animals from accessing the space under your panels.
